Each year Boston is host to many special events. Some are annual events others are one time.

On Patriots Day, the 3rd Monday in April, every year, Boston hosts the oldest and most prestigious marathon in the country, The Boston Marathon . In October, the Charles River is host to the Head of the Charles Regatta® . Rowers from around the world descend on the Boston area to compete in this 2-day rowing event.

Foodies are salivating for the bi-annual Dine Out Boston® , held in March and August. While others await the annual Boston Wine Festival happening during the winter months.

Summer gets going with the Boston Pride Festival for the LGBT community while other anxiously await Harborfest , in honor of the country's birthday and the annual 4th of July events.

And don't forgot Boston's irish heritage - St. Patrick's Day is an experience not to be missed.

Blacksmith festival

September 47 miles NW Fitchburg Blacksmith Art & Renaissance Festival celebrates the art of blacksmithing with competitions, demonstrations, family art activities, music, arts and crafts, and food vendors at Riverfront Park in Fitchburg.

Free music festival

September (11 a.m. to 6 p.m.) 0.1 miles west The Boston Local Music Festival features 50 local bands on three stages, a beer garden, food vendors, and artists in City Hall Plaza. Free.

September 2.4 miles SE Shop from vendors selling American-made goods and foods at American Field market at The Innovation and Design Building in the Seaport neighborhood. Free.

BBQ on the mountain

September 50 miles west The BBQFest features roasted pig, oysters, chili (Saturday), pulled pork (Sunday), live music, a beer tent, craft vendors, keg tossing, a tattoo contest, and a farmer's market at Wachusett Mountain.

Haunted ski area

29 miles NW Witch's Woods [sound] has seven attractions, including a haunted hayride and a nightmare mansion, at Nashoba Valley Ski Area. See schedule.

United Nations lunch

(noon) o.6 miles SW Celebrate the founding of the United Nations at the $120 UN Day Luncheon , with lunch and a speech by Timothy Edgar, former national security and intelligence official, at the Union Club.

Asian film festival

Boston and Cambridge locations Boston Asian American Film Festival showcases the experiences of Asian Americans on film and supports Asian American filmmakers.

Halloween ball in Salem

(7:30 p.m.) 21 miles north Dance in the Grand Ballroom to pop, party, and goth; see a laser light show and costume contest; eat hors d'oeuvres, and visit the cash bar at Salem Witches' Halloween Ball at the Hawthorne Hotel in Salem.

Halloween on the farm

September 22 miles north A ticket to Connors Farm Corn Maze also includes hayrides, pedal carts, and activities in Danvers. The flashlight maze and haunted farm are only open Friday and Saturday nights in October (plus Oct. 6 & 31).

Interactive Sleepy Hollow

September 59 miles east Dress warmly and head to Old Sturbridge Village for The Sleepy Hollow Experience , a ghoulish guided walk through the countryside featuring encounters with characters like the Headless Horseman. Food is sold before the show and during intermission. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

Street festival

September (12 to 6 p.m.) 4.1 miles west Allston Village Street Fair offers activities for families, two stages of live bands, street performers, an artist and vendor market, international food, and an amusement area on Harvard Avenue (from Cambridge St. to Brighton Ave.) in Allston. Free.

Dog party on a farm

September (11 a.m. to 3 p.m.) 9.8 miles NW Bring your dog to Barktober Fest for live music, dog trick demos, activities for dogs and kids, vendors, a dog costume contest, and a beer garden at Wright-Locke Farm in Winchester. Children age 12 and younger are free.
